Chapter Fifteen

So, being abducted twice in one day, was kind of a freaky thing, but even more than that, so was being drawn to the wreck of a pirate ship hidden in the depths of a valley, so well hidden, I didn’t know it was there until I was sliding through the rough edges of what was once a pristine hull, and into the black depths of the long-dead ship.

How did I know it was a pirate ship? The tumble of cannons, barnacle-encrusted skeletons scattered on tarnished gold coins, and a floating flag of a skull and crossbones were a dead giveaway.

The awful thing un-suctioned from my ankle and withdrew into the shadows. I didn’t need an invitation to leave, so I did what any abductee worth her salt would do, and swam like heck towards the shattered hole. Before I had gone two strokes, two arms criss-crossed across the hole, effectively shutting me in.

If I’d had a fish tail, I was sure I could have made it. Eric was right when he said a tail was more effective than human feet when it came to swimming. Why couldn’t my dream-brain have thought up a tail for myself when I went through that mutation thing? A bit of forethought wouldn’t have gone astray.

“I wouldn’t do that, if I were you, dear. I wouldn’t want to anger Fluffy,” a deep voice echoed throughout the chamber.

I spun around, which was hard to do with the weight of the water making my movements cumbersome.

“Who the hell is there?” There was nothing to see in the dim, dark shadows. Not even a ghost. So, I did what anyone would do what they were butt scared. I antagonised. “Too scared to show your face, huh? What’s the matter with it? Cleft lip? Wart nose? Acne?”

The deep chuckle sent goosebumps scattering over my skin, and not in a good way. Not like they had with Eric, Sebastian or Titan. “Are you sure you want to know, little girl?”

Want to know who was currently making me pee my pants? Ahh, that was a hell, yes. I’d never been known to run from my fears, and I wasn’t about to start now.

I thought.

Anything was better than peeing your pants in front of a total stranger. I did have some pride. Plus, peeing in water you’re breathing—just eww.

“Well, I guess if you’re going to be the cause of daily nightmares for the rest of my life, then that’d be a hard no for me. But if not, then go ahead and show yourself.”

“As you wish. Ursulas, at your service.”

A movement to my right caught my attention, and a form shifted from the shadows. A face moved into a shaft of light falling through the hole, and I had to admit—he wasn’t bad. Not bad, at all. A bit on the skinny side, but he had two eyes, a straight nose, good skin and no cleft lip in sight. “Ummm, I was kind of wondering what all the ominous forewarning was about, to be honest.
